MANILA -- (UPDATED) AsiaPOP Comicon Manila, the three-day annual pop culture event that's considered as the country's biggest, has announced its first guests for its 2018 edition.
"Iron Fist" stars Finn Jones and Jessica Henwick will headline the convention – the first time the two will do so in the Philippines – it was revealed on Thursday.
Jones plays Danny Rand, the Immortal Iron Fist, in the Netflix series – which is part of the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe – while Henwick portrays Colleen Wing. Both actors have also appeared in HBO's "Game of Thrones."
The second season of "Iron Fist" is scheduled to be released this year, although an exact date has yet to be announced.
Aside from Jones and Henwick, the event's organizers promise more surprises in store for pop culture fans for this year’s convention.
“I can tell you that if you are excited with the two celebrities that we’ve announced so far, we got something which will make you much more excited about. I promise you about that,” Abdulla Mahmood, marketing and business development head of the Al Ahli Holding Group, told ABS-CBN News.
“At this point of time, we are talking to a lot of talents. Depending on the production schedules and availability, we have to see who can come. So far, the artists we’ve reached out to, nobody has said no to coming to the Philippines. They all know about the AsiaPop Comicon and how Filipinos love pop culture,” he added.
Just like last year, the AsiaPOP Comicon Manila will also cover more bases with Filipino TV stars also participating.
“We have opened doors to local superstars, to local superheroes, local talent. Last year, we had ‘La Luna Sangre.’ We had Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo,” Mahmood said. “Part of the idea of the APCC is giving platform to the best of the local industry merged with the best of the international artists.”
AsiaPOP Comicon Manila is now on its fourth year. In past editions, it has brought to Manila stars such as Paul Bettany, Millie Bobby Brown, and Ray Fisher, among many others.
As to why the Philippines is consistently tapped to host the huge event, Mahmood said: “There’s no other country that has such a huge population that’s into pop culture. When we come to a country like the Philippines, we don’t have to tell them who’s the comic artist, who’s the guest. They have so much knowledge that we get to learn from them.”
The AsiaPOP Comicon Manila 2018 will be held this year at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City from July 27 to July 29.
