MANILA - Angelica Panganiban did not ask for the permission of her boyfriend, actor John Lloyd Cruz, in accepting a project that pairs her anew with her former boyfriend of five years, Carlo Aquino.
The 27-year-old Panganiban will co-star with Aquino in the upcoming episode of "Maalaala Mo Kaya" on Saturday. It will mark the first time they will be working together as a "love team" again in nine years.
Speaking on radio DZMM on Tuesday, a candid Panganiban recalled her conversation with Cruz about the project.
"Tinanong niya ako, 'Ano work mo?' Sabi ko, 'MMK!' 'Sino kasama mo?' 'Si Carlo Aquino.' Hindi talaga nagpaalam!" she said, laughing.
Asked how Cruz reacted to this, Panganiban quipped, "Wala naman, inaya lang ako mag-sun dance! Wala, hindi naman 'yon gano'n, e."
Panganiban explained that Cruz and Aquino are in good terms, adding that on occasion, the three of them even get to hang out.
"Actually kami ni Lloydie, nakakasama namin si Carlo," she said. "Weird ba no'n? Pero nakakasama namin siya. As in, nag-ha-hang out kami. Pero siyempre hindi naman iniimbitahan. Kumbaga pag nagkita sa isang lugar, ganyan. Hindi naman kami nag-iiwasan."
Staying friends after breakup
As for her personal ties with Aquino, Panganiban said there is no awkwardness between them despite their history. The actress emphasized that they managed to resume being friends after their breakup.
"Friends kasi kami, kahit noong naghiwalay kami. Sakto, sa 'Berks' kami naghiwalay! Sa taping kami naghiwalay! Kinwento?" she said, laughing.
Panganiban was referring to the teen-oriented series that ran for two years until 2004 on ABS-CBN. The show was their last TV project as a "love team."
"Siyempre may time naman [na hindi kami naging friends]," Panganiban said. "Imposible naman 'yung maging friends kayo kaagad. Siyempre kung in pain ka, parang mahirap makita 'yung tao."
While they did not act together on TV for almost a decade, Panganiban and Aquino recently shared the big screen in the 2013 suspense-thriller "Ang Alamat ni China Doll," an entry in that year's Cinema One Originals film festival.
Before "China Doll," for which Panganiban won a Best Actress award, the former couple was last paired in a movie in 2003's "Mano Po III: My Love."
Explaining how they managed to stay professional after their separation, Panganiban said, "Siguro ang maganda sa amin, friends kami before maging kami, maging mag-boyfriend-girlfriend."
"So pati 'yung mga kaibigan niya, kaibigan ko. Iisa lang din. So kahit nung naghiwalay, wala, magkikita at magkikita, e. Kinaya naman namin maging friends."
Before Cruz, Panganiban was in a six-year relationship with actor Derek Ramsay. Aquino, meanwhile, is now in a relationship with model Kristine Nieto.
