Former president Corazon Aquino underwent successful laparoscopic surgery on Monday to remove cancer cells from her colon, her daughter Kris Aquino said.

In an SNN: Showbiz News Ngayon report, Kris said the doctors successfully removed all the cancerous portions of her mother's colon.

She said the doctors started the pre-op procedure on Mrs. Aquino at 6:30 a.m. Monday. The former president was wheeled in to the operating room past 9 a.m., she added.

"There was a delay in administering the anesthesia because they wanted to make sure that her vital signs were OK. The actual operation really just lasted  an hour and half," Kris said.

Laparoscopic colon surgery is done by making small incisions on the abdomen compared to larger incisions needed in traditional surgical procedures. A laparoscope (a tiny telescope attached to a video camera) is inserted into one of the openings, allowing the surgeon to see inside the abdomen. Instruments are inserted through the other openings and are used to remove the diseased section of the colon and reattach the healthy segments.

The actress-host said that by 2 p.m. her mom was already sent back to Surgical ICU unit.

Before 6 p.m. Mrs. Aquino woke up and asked what happened to her operation.

“Tinawag niya ako, sabi niya, ‘Kumusta, how was the operation?’ [I said], ‘Mom, it was so good… Una niyang ginawa, right after, [sinabi niya] ‘Thank you, God.’ She told me, ‘Kris, please get my rosary.’ And then she said, 'You pray’, because she wasn't allowed to talk,” she said.

She said her mother was very relieved and grateful that the operation was successful. "It was the first time that I saw that kind of relief and gratitude on her face," she said.

Kris also revealed that she was fighting back tears while praying the rosary.

"I was fighting back tears because I didn't want them to see me crying. She had so much faith that she would be healed. All the doctors reminded us that a patient who believes he will be healed usually does," she said.

The former president has been battling the cancer for almost 14 months now. Mrs. Aquino has undergone a series of chemotherapy sessions since she was first diagnosed with the disease on March 24, 2008.
