MANILA, Philippines (2nd UPDATE) - Filipino-Mexican American singer Jessica Sanchez survived this week's elimination of American Idol (AI) Season 11.
Sanchez is now in AI's Top 5 and will be part of the show's Disney tour.
Other finalists include Joshua Ledet, Phillip Phillips, Skylar Laine and Hollie Cavanagh.
Singer Elise Testone was eliminated.
The Office of the President congratulated Sanchez for moving to the top 5 of the popular US contest.
Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said: “We congratulate Ms. Sanchez on reaching the top five and we hope that she goes further in the competition.”
Sanchez earned restrained praise for singing the Queen song “Bohemian Rhapsody” but bounced back with a stunning performance of Luther Vandross' “Dance With My Father” Wednesday night (Thursday morning in Manila).
“American Idol” judges gave high praises to the 16-year-old singer for her second song choice.
Jennifer Lopez thought Sanchez's rendition of “Dance With My Father” may be the most beautiful she's ever heard.
“We’ve heard a lot of people sing that song. You can imagine over the past two years, it’s such a beautiful song... but the tenderness, the feeling, your vocal ability. The feeling for me more than anything is what makes me say that it’s the most beautiful song I’ve ever heard it,” she said.
Sanchez dedicated the song to her father, who is a soldier. Her father will be deployed to Singapore soon.
