MANILA, Philippines – After Filipina-Mexican "American Idol" contender Jessica Sanchez survived elimination last week, her Filipino-American fans are now making sure that she will stay in the competition.

Supporters of Sanchez cheer her on from her hometown

In a display of support for a Filipino pride unheard of since Pacquiao’s early bids to become People’s Champ, Filipino-Americans in the United States have come together to rally Sanchez to the final showdown on the popular reality singing contest.

With immense outpouring of concern over her near-elimination last week, Sanchez’s multitude of fans have joined calls to actively vote for her week by week.

“Idol” alumni, local and international celebrities, and long-time backers of Sanchez – her family – all came together in a concentrated effort to dial the “Idol” hotlines for the Pinay favorite.

In Chula Vista, California, Sanchez’s hometown in the United States, friends and family of the singer went on a voting spree a night before the results show. The voting party was joined by no less than Chula Vista’s mayor, Cheryl Coz, who joined fans in donning “Jessica” shirts and buttons.

Fil-Am fans ready their phones for voting

And a week since the big jolt, first-batch efforts seem to have paid off.

After the voting in the West Coast for the show’s top six – hours before the results show – Sanchez was at number two on Dial Idol, an independent website that predicts victors and losers on the show based on sample phone votes.

In a season-high record of 53 million votes tallied, Sanchez earned a spot in the show’s top six, albeit with the surprise elimination of another “Idol” favorite Colton Dixon.

The campaign’s momentum, Sanchez’s relatives said, won’t pace any slower in the coming weeks, as they will continue to amass votes for Sanchez to see her through until the show’s final episode in May. -- with a report from Yong Chavez, ABS-CBN News
