Four ABS-CBN programs entered the hall of fame of the USTV Students' Choice Awards during its 11th ceremony held Thursday at the University of Santo Tomas campus in Manila.

ABS-CBN again won this year the top Thomasian leaders' choices of TV network and network foundation for its public service arm Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation.

The Kapamilya network and its personalities won in 18 of 29 categories this year, which included new ones for the growing field of social media.

Newscast “TV Patrol,” informational magazine “Matanglawin,” variety show “ASAP” and drama anthology “Maalaala Mo Kaya” received awards of excellence for winning in their categories at least five times since the first USTV Awards in 2005.

The awards of excellence, given for the first time this year, do not disqualify the recipients from being nominated in future seasons of the USTV.

Top news picks

Anchor Ted Failon, receiving TV Patrol’s award together with Star Patroller Gretchen Fullido, acknowledged the 700-plus employees of ABS-CBN Integrated News in the capital, the regions and overseas.

“Ang ‘TV Patrol’ ay trabaho ng napakaraming mga nagsasakripisyo para maihatid sa inyo ang balita gabi-gabi,” Failon said. “Talaga pong maganda ang taste niyo.”

Late-night newscast “Bandila” took the 2015 students’ choice of newscast, while “Sports Unlimited” won the choice of sports program.

Thomasians also recognized “Spratlys: Mga Isla ng Kalayaan” as their choice of documentary special. A day earlier, the docu received a finalist certificate at the 2015 New York Festivals for Television and Film.

ABS-CBN News personalities Julius Babao, Kim Atienza and Atom Araullo were also cited as students’ choice of male news host, Thomasian male media personality and student leaders’ choice of TV personality, respectively.

Biggest winner

Multimedia star Toni Gonzaga came away the year’s biggest winner, earning the students’ choices for talk show host, reality show host and variety show host.

Her shows “The Buzz” and “The Voice Kids” also won trophies in the talk show and reality categories.

Gonzaga, who also performed for the students, recalled that UST was the shooting location of the soft drink commercial that propelled her to fame for shouting “I love you, Piolo.”

“This is my first time to attend the USTV Awards, and yes, I am looking forward to the second time, and the third time, and the fourth time,” she said.

Primetime series “Dream Dad” bagged this year’s choice of drama program. “It’s Showtime” won in the variety show category.

Social media wins

ABS-CBN along with GMA 7, TV5 and 9TV were also given special citations for their full coverage of Pope Francis’ apostolic visit to the Philippines early this year.

UST, the country’s Roman Catholic university, hosted the pope during his meeting with the youth on January 17.

#PopeFrancisPH, ABS-CBN’s hashtag for the papal visit, was also recognized as the student leaders’ choice of social media campaign for Catholic formation.

It is one of six new categories that acknowledged TV network initiatives and personalities influencing social media—a first for local student award-giving programs.

ABS-CBN’s post-disaster rallying cry, #TulongPH, became the student leaders’ choice in environmental protection.

“What we have learned so far is that our most successful TV shows are the programs that reflect the values of the Filipino people and affirm the ideals and best traits of the Filipino people—things that USTV awards also recognize,” said ABS-CBN corporate communications head Kane Choa, accepting the students’ choice of TV network award.

The USTV Awards this year highlighted the V in its title to represent “Veritas” or truth, the motto of the Dominican order which founded UST.

The winners were determined via online voting through UST’s e-Learning online portal. Meanwhile, more than 250 student leaders in the university were polled for the student leaders’ choice awards.
