Comedian Dennis Padilla, the father of actress Julia Barretto, wants to speak personally with Joshua Garcia after having watched "The Good Son" star's tell-all interview aired Tuesday, finally addressing his rumored breakup with Barretto.
In the interview on "Tonight with Boy Abunda," Garcia confirmed that while he and Barretto remain together, they did have a fight over a viral screenshot of the 20-year-old actor messaging a woman only identified as Dane.
The screenshot shows Garcia commented on a swimsuit photo posted by Dane, through private message, saying, "Art shot." This triggered speculation of infidelity on Garcia's part, but he maintained that he was merely "complimenting" the woman, and had no intentions of "flirting" with her.
A tearful Garcia admitted that his action hurt Barretto, and caused a rift between them. They, however, have managed to patch things up after he apologized to the 21-year-old actress.
Speaking with reporters Wednesday on the sidelines of filming for Padilla's sitcom, "Funny Ka, Pare Ko," the screen veteran said he was able to tune in to the entire interview of Garcia.
Padilla, who has three children with former actress Marjorie Barretto, recalled he first got wind of Julia's situation with Garcia prior to Holy Week. When he got to meet up with his daughter, along with his youngest with Marjorie, Leon, for a joint birthday dinner, he tried to bring up the topic to confirm whether there was truth to the rumors.
"Kumusta, nagkikita pa ba kayo ni Joshua?" Padilla quoted himself having asked Barretto on Holy Wednesday.
Barretto, who lives with Marjorie along with her siblings, replied in the affirmative but noted both she and Garcia have been busy, Padilla narrated.
Noticing his daughter seemed evasive on the topic, Padilla said he cut short the conversation about Garcia "out of respect, at saka adult na 'yang mga 'yan, e."
However, Padilla continued to hear rumors about Barretto and Garcia, and he later got confirmation of his suspicion. He did not specify, however, whether he was referring to Garcia messaging the mystery girl.
While watching Garcia's "Tonight with Boy Abunda" tell-all on Tuesday night, Padilla said he remembered an earlier interview of the young actor on the morning talk show "Magandang Buhay" in February.
That episode, which also featured Barretto, showed Garcia being made to react to an earlier clip of Padilla advising him not to hurt his daughter.
Padilla also shared a personal conversation he had with Garcia in June 2017, specifically on Father's Day.
"Hindi ko makakalimutan. 'Lalaki ka, lalaki ako. Kung magkakaroon ng problema, kausapin mo rin ako.' Iba 'yung nag-uusap nang personal, kaysa 'yung nababalitaan mo lang 'yung kuwento," he said.
Asked if he was disappointed with Garcia's revelation about what happened between him and Barretto, Padilla had a ready answer: "Oo naman, siyempre anak mo 'yun, e."
However, he added that he trusts Barretto and Garcia can resolve their situation, as they are both adults. This did not stop him from giving an advice to his eldest daughter.
Mainit, e."
When a reporter noted that Padilla seemed to be "teary-eyed," the comedian admitted, "Masama 'yung loob ko noong mga nakaraang araw, e."
"Ang bilis ko magsalita, nakita mo? Kasi bago ko kayo nakaharap, alam ko na ang sasabihin 'pag may lumapit sa akin. At ito na 'yon, nasabi ko na agad," he added, as he gestured that his heart was beating fast.
He, however, acknowledged Garcia's honesty and the fact that the young stars have since reconciled. Pointing out that he had similar mistakes as Garcia in his younger years, Padilla said, "Ang kailangan, aregluhin mo agad, kasi in general, ang mga babae, mahaba ang pasensya, pero 'pag dumating doon sa punto na sagad na, wala ka nang babalikan."
Padilla is also open to meeting Garcia, should the former "Pinoy Big Brother" housemate reach out to him.
"Mag-sorry lang sa akin, okay na 'yun. 'Sorry, Tito Dennis, nagkamali ako.' Pag inulit niya 'yun, magiging action star na talaga ako, wala nang makakapigil no'n, at hindi na ako nagpapatawa no'n," he said.
Aware that Barretto and Garcia have loyal followers rooting for them, Padilla went on to address the fandom dubbed "JoshLia."
"Sa fans ng 'JoshLia,' bigyan po natin sila ng isa pang pagkakataon. Masaya po ang partnership nila, at alam kong mahal na mahal ng anak ko si Joshua," he said.
