MANILA, Philippines - Daiana Menezes, the Brazilian host of the noontime TV show “Eat Bulaga!”, said she has been paying her taxes religiously.
Menezes made the statement after the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) on Thursday filed tax evasion charges against her before the Department of Justice.
In a statement, Menezes stressed that she respects the country's laws and policies and she has been paying taxes.
"The issue about my taxes is being addressed and I have been paying my taxes religiously. In fact, I am bound to pay before the April 15 deadline. I may be Brazilian -- but as someone working here in the Philippines, I am always respectful of its laws and policies."
The BIR said Menezes did not file any income tax return for taxable years 2007 to 2009 despite being required under the law as a resident alien deriving income from within the Philippines.
It said her estimated aggregate tax liabilities amounted to P983,658.07 for deficiency income and percentage taxes covering taxable years 2007 to 2009, inclusive of surcharges and interests.
Menezes' case is the 38th filed under the Run After Tax Evaders (RATE) program of the BIR under Commissioner Kim Jacinto-Henares. -- With a report from ANC
