'Wrath of the Titans' tops PH box-office on debut

MANILA, Philippines – Filipinos trooped to watch “Wrath of the Titans” ahead of the Holy Week break, propelling the action sequel to the top spot on the box office chart on its first weekend of release in the country.

According to the latest report of Box Office Mojo, the sequel to the 2010 hit “Clash of the Titans” earned an estimated $1,459,095 or around P62.4 million from March 28 to April 1 on 194 screens.

“Wrath of the Titans” also took first place at the overseas box office this weekend, earning $76.1 million from 60 markets this weekend, which added up to a worldwide debut of $109.6 million. Its top market was Russia, where it earned $12.8 million.

“The Hunger Games” held up well on its second week of release, earning $835,472 or around P35.7 million, to bring its total earnings to $2,683,780 P114.9 million after only two weeks.

Box Office Mojo originally placed “The Hunger Games” at No. 4 on its first weekend of release but eventually corrected its figures. The movie based on Suzanne Collins’ best-selling novel was actually the top film on March 21-25 with a box-office take of $1,453,909 or around P62.26 million.

Meanwhile, the local horror film, “Corazon: Ang Unang Aswang” crossed the $1-million mark on its third weekend of release, falling just a notch to No. 3. The digital film, starring Derek Ramsay and Erich Gonzales, has now earned $1,150,525 or around P49.27 million.

“John Carter,” on the other hand, passed the $2-million mark on its fourth weekend with total earnings of $2,018,957 or around P86.26 million.

The Philippine-Indonesian production, “The Witness,” brought its total box office take to $178,880 (P7.66 million) on its second weekend of release, while the romantic comedy “My Kontrabida Girl” extended its earnings to $305,718 (P13 million) on its third weekend.

Apart from “Wrath of the Titans,” no other movie had a wide release, probably because many malls will be closed on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

Malls are expected to re-open on Black Saturday, which will see the release of the comedy film, “Moron 5 and the Crying Lady.”
