MANILA – While admitting being a Barretto has its perks, “Mirabella” star Julia Barretto noted that carrying the family name can also be scary.
In an interview with ABS-CBN News’ MJ Felipe, Barretto said her surname carries with it tremendous pressure given the showbiz success of her aunts Gretchen and Claudine.
“Ang laking pressure because ang dami na nilang napatunayan. There are so many things about their lives na napakita sa publiko. So people expect me to be like them. It's scary. It's unfair, of course,” she said.
But the young Barretto said she does not want this to stop her from pursuing her dream. “That's the challenge. I have to prove to them na I'm a different Barretto. This is Julia Barretto,” she said.
Contrary to what many people think, Barretto said she was not really interested in the entertainment industry when she was younger even though she comes from a showbiz family.
“I'd see them do it but I was never interested kasi. But when I was 9, dun lang ako tinanong. I was so curious and I started asking my parents 'Can I try it out?' Tapos I stopped for a couple of years. I wanted to focus on my studies kasi. And then I kind of looked for it again, parang timing lang,” she said.
She added: “Wala akong malay [sa showbiz noon], I was 9. Siguro kung nagustuhan ko siya, I would have stayed. I wouldn't have left. Hindi ko rin sineryoso. I entered a big school and I'd see people na school lang and no work after. I said I want to be like this, I want to be normal.”
But Barretto said she is now in the process of “falling in love with work.”
“I just started again last year. I'm in the process of starting to love it. But I like it so I don't think I want to quit again like I did before,” she said.
Asked what she loves the most about being in showbiz, Barretto said: “I like everything that follows with just being an actress. Not for the fame or anything. I don't know, I think it's the blood. You kind of just look for it, you feel it.”
Now that she’s in the industry, Barretto said she wants to emulate some aspects of the lives of her aunts, Gretchen and Claudine.
The teen star said she hopes to be "fabulous" like Gretchen. “She’s very generous. She's like my mother na din,” she said.
As for Claudine, the young Barretto said: “She’s malambing. Super malambing and mabait. [I miss her] very much. I'm a very big fan. I love ‘Milan,’ ‘Marina’ and ‘Anak.’ The best!”
Considered "showbiz royalty," Julia was launched as a member of Star Magic Circle 2013, a group of young artists groomed for stardom by the talent management firm of ABS-CBN.
