MANILA - "Meteor Garden" is back.

The Taiwanese series, which first aired locally on ABS-CBN in 2003, returned with a bang Monday as the first episode of its afternoon re-run easily dominated conversations online.

On micro-blogging site Twitter, the comeback telecast of "Meteor Garden" was met with excitement by long-time fans and new viewers alike, making it a trending topic in the Philippines and worldwide.

At one point, "Meteor Garden" nearly swept the top 10 trends locally, with terms and hashtags related to the series taking 9 of the spots in the list.

Based on the Japanese manga series "Hana Yori Dango," the romantic-comedy series is credited for having started the trend of airing "Asianovelas" in the Philippines.

Its wild popularity when it originally aired showed in hairstyle and fashion trends among the youth, as well as in chart-topping singles from the series' soundtrack.

F4, the fictional group-turned-real-life band composed of Jerry Yan, Vic Zhou, Vanness Wu, and Ken Chu, also became superstars in the Philippines.

Together with lead actress Barbie Hsu, F4 visited the country at the height of the popularity of "Meteor Garden" to stage concerts here.

Aside from ABS-CBN, the re-run of "Meteor Garden" also airs on Jeepney TV (SkyCable Channel 9) on primetime.
