|Filipino-Mexican singer Jessica Sanchez sings Beyonce's "Sweet Dreams" on "American Idol."
MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – Jessica Sanchez may not have received a standing ovation from the “American Idol” judges this time but it was surely another round of rave reviews for the 16-year-old Filipino-Mexican-American belter.
During the “Songs of Your Idols” night on Wednesday (Thursday in Manila), Sanchez wowed the “Idol” viewers and judges anew with her slow-burn performance of Beyonce's hit song "Sweet Dreams."
It was indeed a "sweet dream" for Sanchez as the slowed down version of the Beyonce hit earned the nods of the "American Idol" judges.
Judge Randy Jackson was lavish in his praise, saying Sanchez had "unbelievable talent."
"You innately have this unbelievable talent. I look forward to hearing you every night. I think you're one of the best singers I've heard in many years. Unbelievable, sensational," he said.
Jennifer Lopez said she loved Sanchez's version of the song because it left her wanting more. "If I was Beyonce, I would slow that one down," she said.
“It was a really really beautiful rendition of it. Really gorgeous and you did a beautiful job on it... I love that because it’s like I wanted more. You left all of us wanting more. That’s what great performers do. They leave you wanting more,” she added.
Steven Tyler also complimented Sanchez for holding back on the song.
“I think you’re a star no matter what. You did it again tonight. I like that you held it back a little bit. You really know your notes,” he said.
Sanchez also got positive reviews from several TV critics.
USA Today lauded Sanchez’s dramatic performances with her perfectly controlled voice.
“Jessica begins the song accompanied only by a harp. It's a dramatic effect, especially when combined with Jessica's voice, which is perfectly controlled. The band fleshes out the arrangement as the song builds, but you hardly notice. Jessica's that much in charge. Wow. Just wow,” the article said.
Newsday, on the other hand, said Sanchez “could tour, now, complete with the big voice, attitude and stage presence.”
TVLine also thought Sanchez’s performance “was absolutely stellar.”
Aside from her solo performance, Sanchez also performed a Madonna medley with Hollie Cavanagh and Skylar Laine.
Currently, dialidol.com places Sanchez at the eighth spot with a score of 2.238. Dialidol.com warned that Sanchez “may be voted off or safe -- it's just too close to call” based on its margin of error.
Sanchez held the top spot in dialidol.com last week.
The voting results will be announced on Thursday night (Friday morning in Manila) and another contestant will be sent home.
