MANILA, Philippines -- TV host-actress Coleen Garcia has decided to end her relationship with dancer Gab Valenciano, who left Monday for the United States to pursue a music career.
The "It's Showtime" mainstay and the son of performer Gary Valenciano broke up only days before he left for Orlando, Florida, where he is set to finish a 2-year music course, according to a report from entertainment news site Philippine Entertainment Portal.
Garcia, who was in a relationship with Valenciano for a year, said she had been contemplating ending her relationship with the 24-year-old dancer leading up to his scheduled flight for the States.
The young actress, who appears in ABS-CBN's "Little Champ," cited their different goals and their long-distance relationship as the reasons behind their break-up.
"He’s doing this for himself," the 20-year-old said of her former boyfriend's move to the States.
"If kunwari kung magpa-priority list 'yung relationship, e, 'di hindi siya pupunta. But it’s not how it should be, dapat on the top of your priority list—next to God and to your family—is yourself. Go there and work on yourself."
"If I go there to the States, I’m not prioritizing myself, I’m prioritizing the relationship. Right here in the Philippines, I have a good life here, I have my family here," she said.
Garcia added, "More importantly, than my own life, may pamilya ako who’s depending on me kahit papaano. Biglaan na lang ako aalis, biglaan ko na lang iiwan yun saka yung career ko?"
"Malaki ang utang na loob ko sa ABS-CBN, sa mga breaks na ibinibigay nila sa akin. Hindi ko basta-basta iiwan 'yun. So he’s prioritizing himself and I’m prioritizing myself also," she said.
Asked if she still loves Valenciano, Garcia answered: "Hindi naman mawawala 'yun. Kasi when you love a person, hindi naman mahal mo lang siya dahil nandito siya sa buhay mo or kasama mo siya—you’re with the person."
"I love Gab, I love his family, I still care about them. Siguro kasi, with Gab, it’s different when you love someone and when you want to be with someone," she added.
"Right now, I love him, I love his family, pero I don’t think I should be with him," she said.
