MANILA - The hardships, insecurities and sacrifices of Filipina singing caregiver Rose Fostanes, the first-ever winner of "X-Factor Israel," took center stage at this week's episode of ABS-CBN's drama anthology "Maalala Mo Kaya."
The episode, entitled "Mikropono," told her less than humble beginnings, being forced to take care of her four siblings and her mother after being abandoned by their womanizing father.
"Mikropono" also showed how the openly-gay Fostanes found solace in her voice as she began joining several amateur singing competitions with the support of her mother and girlfriend, Mel.
Actress Vivieka Ravanes, one of the cast members of the noontime series "Be Careful With My Heart," played the role of the older Fostanes in the episode.
Ravanes delivered a convincing portrayal of Fostanes, especially in the highly emotional scenes showing the caregiver mourning her mother's death and confronting her father.
The episode went on to tell Fostanes' life in Israel and her slow rise to fame with her performances in small pubs and bars.
She was urged to audition for the reality singing competition '"X-Factor Israel" by friends and in doing so, Fostanes began to capture the hearts of Israelis and OFWs alike.
Fostanes, of course, went on to win the competition with her often labeled "strong" and "powerful" voice. Her win became an inspiration to the many Filipinos abroad, earning her a hero's welcome in the country back in February.
Directed by Mae Czarina Cruz, "Mikropono" was written by Joan Habana and Arah Jell Badayos.
