MANILA - "Anything is possible."
This was the answer of both Julia Barretto and Enrique Gil, who will co-star in ABS-CBN's "Mirabella," when asked on the possibility of a romantic relationship between them.
"Para sa akin, oo naman. I never say never. Maganda naman si Julia, mabait. Masaya kasama," the 21-year-old actor said during a press conference for the upcoming primetime series held Tuesday.
For her part, Barretto, who is five years younger than Gil, quipped, "Look at that face... Why not? He's a really nice guy. And I'm a nice girl, so solid 'to!"
Both agreed to wait and see, noting that they continue to enjoy each other's company. "Hindi ko pa alam. Kasi parang parehas kami. Hindi pa namin iniisip. Enjoy muna," Gil said.
Since the announcement of the new team-up, fans of Gil's previous tandem with actress and "Ikaw Lamang" star Julia Montes were quick to voice out their disappointment.
Asked how she responded to the criticisms she received for being Gil's newest leading lady, Barretto said, "I just don't [mind them]. With everything that's going on right now, I'd rather not put my time and effort sa mga something negative. I'd rather stay positive. There's really no time for wasted attention."
She did, however, ask critics and fans to reserve judgement on her acting, considering that this is her first TV series in a lead role. "Sana bigyan ako ng oras to learn, and experience and improve. Kasi hindi naman 'yun namamadali."
While carrying the Barretto name admittedly adds pressure for her, the showbiz newcomer said it is also reassuring that fans of her celebrity family have expressed their support for her. "Nakakagana siya. The more that I want to be better, improve talaga."
Directed by Erick Salud ("Aryana," "May Isang Pangarap") and Jerome Pobocan ("Mara Clara," "May Bukas Pa"), "Mirabella" tells the story of a cursed young woman who is afraid to fall in love because of her wood-like complexion.
The series, which will also star Pokwang, John Lapus, Sam Concepcion, is set to air on ABS-CBN this month.
