MANILA -- Filipino-American actor Reggie Lee will star alongside one of the most feared mythical creatures in Philippine folklore, the aswang, in an episode of the US television series, "Grimm."
Set to air on March 7, the episode titled "Mother Dearest" will focus on Lee's character, Sgt. Wu, and his encounter with the "creepiest creature" the producers of the show have seen, the vampire-like aswang.
"The story involves the aswang and it involves Wu helping this couple who just moved to Portland from the Philippines," Lee said in an interview.
Born in the Philippines, Lee was responsible for pitching the idea of the "aswang" to the producers of the show.
"They came to me and asked if I knew any Filipino fairy tales," he said. "I'm very in touch with my Filipino culture, so I told them, 'Yeah, I know a ton. Would you like a list?"
The producers, Jim Kouf and David Greenwalt, ended up choosing the legend of aswang, a well-known shape-shifter with a fork-like tongue, said to feast on the fetuses of pregnant women.
"They took the major aspects of the aswang and stayed very true to the folklore," Lee said. "The look they came up with didn't quite match up to my image of the aswang, but people who work on the show are saying it's the creepiest creature they've seen yet. And this deep into the third season, that's really saying something."
While he can't reveal any more details about what the creature looks like, Lee was brimming with pride for what he did in the episode featuring his Filipino roots.
"I couldn't be prouder of the work we've done on this episode," Lee said. "It's one of the most fulfilling experiences I've had in my entire life. I don't mean to oversell it, but everything just came together with this episode."
Is this the aswang Lee is talking about?
Inspired by the classic Grimm Brothers' Fairy Tales, "Grimm" features a homicide detective (Nick Burkhardt), whose job includes keeping the mythological creatures of the world called "Wesen" in check.
"Grimm" airs every Monday, 8 p.m., on Philippines' Jack TV.
