It's been clear for some time that "My Ex and Whys" is Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil's most successful movie to date. The question now is how much it will make when it ends its box-office run.
As of Friday, the romantic flick has snagged P341 million worldwide. This includes ticket sales from local cinemas, as well as screenings in the Middle East, Europe, Asia Pacific, the US and Canada.
Producer Star Cinema announced the figure in a thanksgiving party, which was attended by both Soberano and Gil. Director Cathy Garcia-Molina was also present.
"To be honest, starting this movie, I did not expect it to be a huge, huge hit," admitted Gil, adding that he felt underwhelmed with the movie's plot. "Nung una hindi ako na-excite."
"But sometimes the purity of the story, that's what captured a lot of people. So para sa akin I didn't expect it to be this good and this amazing."
Soberano turned emotional when she opened up about the difficulties she had in portraying the role of a teen girl in a relationship with an unfaithful partner. She thanked Molina for sticking with her despite her shortcomings.
"I always like to say that direk is one of my biggest mentors when it comes to acting. I basically started with her, doing 'Got To Believe.' Then we worked on 'Forevermore' and this movie.
"She never gave up on me even during the times I felt like I couldn't give my best. When I felt I wasn't delivering what she wanted me to deliver, she was there. Thank you, direk."
"My Ex and Whys" is Gil and Soberano's third film together in the lead. It's highly successful box-office run is a testament to their growing popularity since their breakout teleserye, "Forevermore."
To compare, the love team's other films, "Just the Way You Are" and "Everyday I Love You," both barely passed the P100-million mark back in 2015.
"My Ex and Whys" is still showing in select cinemas nationwide. It premiered on February 15.
