10 singing runners-up who made it big anyway

In the Philippines where karaoke is a national pastime and where the vocally talented are celebrated, winning in a singing competition is a sure ticket to stardom. 

Longevity and momentum, however, are a different topic altogether.

Over the years, runners-up in televised star searches have proven that not clinching the top prize does not equate to fading away or lost opportunity. In some cases, it's the opposite; in fact, some finalists have even eclipsed their victors eventually.

In photos, here's a look at 11 stars who finished runner-up or finalist in their respective competitions, but made it big in showbiz anyway:

MORISSETTE

Her semi-finalist finish in "The Voice of the Philippines" did not stop Morissette from reaching greater heights, having launched a solo album and filling up the historic Big Dome with her "Morissette is Made" concert. Instagram.com/itsmorissette

MAKISIG MORALES

He was first runner-up in "Little Big Star" in 2005, but bigger doors opened for Morales after the singing competition, specifically acting in hits like "Super Inggo" and the upcoming fantaserye "Bagani." Instagram.com/makisig228

JULIE ANN SAN JOSE

DARREN ESPANTO

AICELLE SANTOS

MARKKI STROEM

ESANG DE TORRES

She may have only placed third in "The Voice Kids," but de Torres training earned her big roles in several theater productions thereafter, including Cosette in "Les Miserables" and the titular character in "Matilda the Musical." Instagram.com/esangdetorres

JAKE ZYRUS

As Charice, Zyrus placed third in "Little Big Star" in 2005, but what followed was an international career backed by the likes of Oprah and Ellen DeGeneres. MARK BAUTISTA

CHRISTIAN BAUTISTA
