MANILA - Social media users were quick to voice out their opinion towards the new rape complaint filed against actor-host Vhong Navarro, with most of the netizens questioning both its sincerity and timing.
Former beauty pageant contestant Roxanne Acosta Cabanero accused Navarro of sexual assault, which happened in 2010, amid the current controversy involving the actor and model Deniece Cornejo.
On Friday night, local newscast "TV Patrol" asked social media users: “Naniniwala ka ba sa bagong akusasyon ng panggagahasa na ibinabato laban kay Vhong Navarro?”
Twitter user Jenna Termulo (@TheReal_Jhenna) believed the statements made by Cabanero, lauding the victim's courage to come out in public and file charges against the actor.
Twitter user Renalyn Taracatac (@__rtt18), on the other hand, doubted the sincerity of the rape complaint.
Facebook user Pearl Erasmo-Martinez, meanwhile, cited inconsistencies in Roxanne’s statement and was confused with the timing, noting that public sympathy currently lies with Navarro.
"Maraming inconsistencies. Kung toto, nakakaawa yung girl kasi mali ung timing nya to come out. Public sympathy is with Vhong nowadays so whatever happened, mas maniniwala ang tao kay Vhong. Kung hindi totoo, mas nakakaawa kasi nagpagamit sya and her name will be the one that is raked through the mud."
Facebook users Jennifer Mercado Tiu, Florame Malayao and Salma Tely Bagas Lopena shared the same sentiment, with all three downplaying the rape complaint as another strategy of the opposing camp to divert attention.
Others, however, criticized Cabanero's "acting."
