MANILA, Philippines – Pop diva Kuh Ledesma has had her share of belting out or “birit” performances, but she cautioned young singers against “shouting” their songs to get to the high notes.
In an interview with Bro. Jun Banaag on dzMM Friday, the guest “hurado” on ABS-CBN’s noontime show “It’s Showtime” said singers should discern what is called for by a song in a performance, as it isn’t always to sing and shout.
“Sa’kin kasi when you perform a song, kung ano lang ‘yung hinihingi ng song, dapat ‘yun lamang,” Kuh said. “Hindi naman sa ibibitin mo, pero ibig sabihin hindi pwedeng ang kanta sinisigaw lagi. Mayroon talagang portion [para dyan]. That’s what you call the ‘dynamics.’”
There are also adverse effects of too much “birit” on singers’ vocal ability, Kuh said. “Madaling masira ang boses pag lahat ng kanta mo ganoon. Kaya you will see a lot of singers who do ‘yung mga birit-birit na ganyan ay nagkakaroon ng nodes or namamaos sila.”
Despite this trend of shout-singing among young singers, Kuh acknowledged that there are more talented singers locally today than before. “Maraming magagaling ngayon, mas marami kaysa noon.”
This is why Kuh continues to call on media, specifically radio stations, to continue playing original Filipino music despite the booming popularity of foreign music among the youth.
“Hindi naman kasi nakaka-encourage kapag nakakarinig tayo ng mga foreign songs sa radyo, syempre ‘yan at ‘yan ang kakantahin ng mga kabataan ngayon. The influence of hearing: Kung ano ang naririnig mo, doon ka talaga mapapasunod,” Kuh said. “So I encourage the radio stations na sana pagbigyan at magkaroon ng plano na mas maraming patugtugin na original music.”
She said that although there is an ordinance addressing this issue, follow-through action is still lacking. “Medyo famous tayo sa ganyan. Mayroong ordinance, hindi [naman] ginagawa.”
“OPM needs someone who is passionate enough, at saka dapat maniwala tayo na magaling ang Pilipino. Dapat mahalin po natin ang sariling atin, doon po tayo uunlad talaga,” she said.
