MANILA - Basketball star James Yap credits his son, Bimby, for inspiring his game-winning performance against Barangay Ginebra in the semifinals of the PBA Philippine Cup on Wednesday.
Speaking with ABS-CBN News' Ginger Conejero, the San Mig Coffee player explained why he managed to consistently put up big numbers in the best-of-seven series.
"Ganun naman talaga pag do-or-die. Talagang iisipin mo talaga na wala nang bukas," he said. "Lagi kong iniisip na kapag Game 7, ilabas mo na yung mga natutunan mo sa basketball simula nung bata ka."
But more than living up to his moniker of "Big Game James," the two-time Most Valuable Player admitted he was inspired by his upcoming birthday reunion with his son.
"Pero of course, 'yung pinakasamasayang part eh 'yung magkita kami ng anak ko for my birthday. So 'yun yung inspiration ko, though, 'yun naman lagi inspiration ko eh," he said.
Yap, who is celebrating his 32nd birthday on Saturday, also reiterated his gratitude to his ex-wife, Kris Aquino, for giving him this opportunity to bond with his son over "merienda."
"Merienda nga lang daw eh. Pero thank you na rin. Happy birthday din," he said to Aquino, who is celebrating her birthday on Valentines' Day.
Yap, however, refused to disclose any further information regarding his plans with Bimby, but said that he wants it to be a special. He noted that this will be the first time he will get to celebrate with Bimby since his separation frmo Aquino.
"Oo kasi hindi ko alam kung tama o mali, pero ito yata yung first birthday ko simula nung naghiwalay kami na yung day talaga ng birthday ko, nakasama ko yung anak ko," he revealed.
Yap hopes that this will be a start of a more cordial relationship with his ex-wife, saying that he wouldn't want his son to be teased by his peers because of his parents.
"Lagi kong pinagdadasal na sana maging okay na lahat, na wala ng gulo. Siyempre, habang lumalaki 'yung anak namin, hindi maiiwasan na asarin siya ng mga tao tungkol sa mama at papa niya," he said.
"Sana wala ng away. Kasi kahit bali-baliktarin mo yung mundo, may anak kami."
