Series gears up for 'second pilot'

MANILA, Philippines -- The "teleserye" return of Angelica Panganiban on Monday was eagerly awaited by viewers as shown by the high nationwide ratings for the latest addition to ABS-CBN's Primetime Bida lineup.

According to data from multinational research group Kantar Media, the pilot episode of "Apoy sa Dagat" aired on February 11 garnered a national TV rating of 25.9%, enough to put it at No. 5 in the list of the most watched programs in the country that day.

Completing the top 5 list are the Kapamilya programs "Ina Kapapatid Anak" (36.7%), "Juan dela Cruz" (35.9%), "Be Careful With My Heart" (27.4%) and "TV Patrol" (27.2%).

In the premiere episode of the FM Reyes and Nick Olanka-directed soap, the characters of Nikki Gil, Empress Schuck and Patrick Garcia are caught in a bitter love triangle, setting in motion events involving Serena, Rebecca (both portrayed by Panganiban), Anton (Ocampo) and Ruben (Pascual) several years later.

The entry of the principal characters of the soap, according to Panganiban, will mark the "second pilot" of the series.

"'Yung pilot week pa lang, ilang months siyang pinagtrabahuhan ng lahat, kaya ganun kaganda," the actress told ABS-CBN News on Monday. "Gaya nga ng sabi ni PJ (Pascual), usually 'yung first week lang 'yung maganda, talagang enggrande. Ito, first, second hanggang pataas nang pataas 'yung pangyayari."

Pascual added, "I think it's the scenes na akala mo binigay na talaga sa pilot, pero talagang nag-eescalate pa every week. So even for us, the challenge becomes harder, at paghirap nang pahirap 'yung pagma-mount."

"Apoy sa Dagat" also stars Angel Aquino, Aiko Melendez, Sylvia Sanchez, Perla Bautista, Liza Lorena, Freddie Webb, Melai Cantiveros, Eric Fructuoso, Regine Angeles, Bryan Santos and Mikaila Ramirez.

It airs weeknights after "Ina, Kapatid, Anak" during ABS-CBN's Primetime Bida block.

Kantar Media uses a nationwide panel size of 2,609 urban and rural homes, more than AGB Nielsen’s 1,980 homes that are only based in urban areas. Kantar Media’s panel represents 100% of the total Philippine TV viewing population, while AGB Nielsen reportedly represents only 57% of the Philippine TV viewing population.
