MANILA - Gabby Concepcion referred to as "surreal" his reunion project with his former wife Sharon Cuneta, 25 years after they last worked together.
The veteran actor, 53, spoke with ABS-CBN News' Mario Dumaual on Friday, as his McDonald's TV ad with Cuneta went viral on social media within an hour of being uploaded.
"Reunion talaga, bringing back the classic. Iyon ang sabi sa amin, eh," Concepcion said of the one-minute video, where he and Cuneta are depicted crossing paths and then sharing a table for dinner.
Asked for his reaction to the positive response to the ad, Concepcion answered: "Thank you so much. Life's good, people are good, everybody's helpful, very supportive. God is good. Nothing to complain about, everything to be thankful for."
"Actually, naramdaman ko rin, e," the former matinee idol added, referring to some of his fans turning emotional over the reunion. "Pinanood ko nang paulit-ulit, hindi rin ako makapaniwala. It was a dream."
Considered as one of the most sought after "love teams" in the '80s, Concepcion and Cuneta's onscreen romance bled into real life, paving the way for their 1984 wedding. A year later, they welcomed their only child, KC, now 32.
The couple, however, eventually separated. Their marriage was annulled, and they both re-married. Concepcion is currently with Genevieve Gonzales, his third wife, while Cuneta is married to Sen. Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan.
Since he returned to the Philippines in 2008 to resume his showbiz career -- he was based in the US for a time -- Concepcion has crossed paths with Cuneta numerous time, but they never managed to have a conversation.
"Ito 'yung first time na nagsama kami na gano'n katagal in one place," Concepcion said, referring to the commercial shoot. "Oras ang binilang noong nagsama kami, hindi lang minuto. It was surreal. I never thought that it was ever going to happen again."
Concepcion echoed Cuneta's social media posts about having a friend again, coinciding with the release of their project.
"Nakita ko na okay kami, although hindi kami nag-uusap madalas. Hindi ganito katagal ang usap namin. Marami kaming napag-usapan, but it's all on the surface lang," he said.
Asked whether his and Cuneta's fans can expect a followup soon after this ad, Concepcion was forthcoming about being particular with a potential new project.
"Kailangan lang talaga right project, para hindi lang 'yung viewers ang matutuwa sa ginawa namin, maski kami, maski ako matutuwa ako na ginagawa ko 'yun. At mas maganda gumawa ng project pag gusto mo, at hindi napipilitan ka lang," he explained.
Concepcion added: "Ito, talagang gustung-gusto ko na gumawa. Hindi ko lang mahanap ang tamang project, ang tamang storya. Parang hindi sumu-shoot 'no. Pero this project, pasok, and I felt it."
The former couple was at one point set to do a big-screen reunion in December 2016, but it was postponed and eventually shelved due to a variety of reasons.
Asked to give a message to Cuneta, Concepcion looked directly at the camera as if to address his ex-wife. "Thank you, Sharon, for accepting the project," he said. "Never ko naman hinindian ang kahit na anong project basta kasama ka."
