MANILA – ABS-CBN kicked off 2016 with a bang as it remains the most watched TV network in the country for the month of January.

According to recent data from Kantar Media, the station garnered an average audience share of 43% from combined urban and rural homes, compared to GMA’s 36%.

ABS-CBN also dominated the primetime block hitting an average audience share of 48% nationwide against its rival’s 33%.

The primetime block is the most important part of the day when most Filipinos watch TV and advertisers put a larger chunk of their investment in to reach more consumers effectively, ABS-CBN said in a statement released on Tuesday.

The station’s afternoon block also garnered a 42% nationwide rating versus GMA’s 37%.

Topping the list of most watched programs during the previous month is “Ang Probinsyano” with 39.8%. The show is the TV adaptation of the 1997 film starring Fernando Poe Jr. in the title role, which is now being played by Coco Martin in the small screen version.

It was followed by “Pangako Sa ’Yo” (31.4%), “Maalaala Mo Kaya” (31.4%), “Wansapanataym” (31.4%) and “Dance Kids” (29.8%).

Kantar Media data also showed that Filipinos continue to rely on “TV Patrol” as their news source. It was the only news broadcast in the Top 10 programs of January, landing at the fourth spot with an average national TV rating of 28.7%.

Two new programs also debuted strongly in January. “Pilipinas Got Talent Season 5” had an average rating of 26.6%, while “Be My Lady” earned a remarkable 18.3% rating.

“Rated K” (24.3%) and “Home Sweetie Home” (24.1%) rounded up the Kapamilya programs in the Top 10.

Meanwhile, "It's Showtime," which was able to regain the lead in the weekday noontime slot with 16.1% compared to its rival show's 15.2%.

Kantar Media uses a nationwide panel size of 2,609 urban and rural homes that represent 100 percent of the total Philippine TV viewing population, while the other ratings data supplier AGB Nielsen reportedly has only 1,980 homes based solely in urban areas that represent only 57 percent.

The strong ratings performance of these shows bolstered ABS-CBN's lead over rival networks throughout 2015. From January to December, the Kapamilya network had an average audience share of 43 percent nationwide, while GMA 7 only got 36 percent.
