MANILA -- The principal and supporting cast members of the upcoming ABS-CBN series "Juan dela Cruz" share the triumphs and struggles of their respective characters in a behind-the-scenes reel released Thursday.
Billed as the biggest "teleserye" of the Kapamilya network this year, "Juan dela Cruz" features Coco Martin as the title character, a "Filipino-made superhero."
In the behind-the-scenes video released Thursday via ABS-CBN's official YouTube page, Martin said his character as a child (portrayed by Izzy Canillo) grows up to be mischievous. Behind his playful facade, however, Juan struggles to find his real identity.
Juan is raised by a priest (Jaime Fabregas) and later by a fortune teller (Gina Pareno), as he continues to unravel the mystery of his past. He later takes hold of a holy cross -- which shifts into four different weapons -- enabling him to fight the forces of evil.
Not known to Juan, his father, Samuel (Albert Martinez), is the king of all "aswang." The evil incarnate's wife, Laura, is portrayed by Zsa Zsa Padilla.
"Sa society, very respected sila, very rich, maraming influence, pero sa totoo lang, [sila ay] hari at reyna ng mga aswang," the actress-singer said.
Joel Torre, meanwhile, portrays Pepe, a man whose journey of revenge has him leading an army of "aswang hunters" bent on capturing Samuel.
Rosario, played by Erich Gonzales, is one such "aswang hunter." A childhood friend of Juan, the two reunite after 14 years, allowing love to bloom between them.
Also in the cast of "Juan dela Cruz" is Arron Villaflor as Kael, the son of Samuel and Laura; Lotlot de Leon and William Lorenzo as Cora and Ben, Rosario's foster parents; Neil Coleta as Asiong, Juan's "sidekick"; John Medina as Agustin, the lieutenant of Pepe; Louise Abuel as Pikoy, a street kid who idolizes Juan; and MC as Queenie, the assistant of Laura.
Directed by Malu Sevilla and Avel Sunpongco, "Juan dela Cruz" will start airing on Monday after "TV Patrol" as part of ABS-CBN's Primetime Bida block.
