Doctors and nutritionists – not to mention our parents -- have often expressed the virtues of having breakfast. But what’s the big deal about breakfast? Well, while we sleep, our body does not take-in anything. It is like our body is fasting for hours while we are sleeping. It’s almost like a fast. So it is very important that we take something – or “breaking the fast,” so to speak -- after waking up and before going to our daily activities.

“Many studies say that when kids and adult eat their breakfast, they have better thinking, memory, focus, concentration and performance at school,” says Dr. Kristine Reyes, Nutritionist at The Medical City.

Breakfast also jump-starts your metabolism,” says Elisabetta Politi, Nutrition Manager at Duke University Medical School. "When you don't eat breakfast, you're actually fasting for 15 to 20 hours, so you're not producing the enzymes needed to metabolize fat to lose weight."

One of the most common misconceptions about losing weight is skipping a meal. Others think that skipping meals will prevent them from taking in calories. On the contrary, this habit will make you starve for your next meal and eat more than required. That’s called starvation eating.

To prevent yourself from being overweight and worse, becoming obese because of starvation eating, Dr. Reyes gives some breakfast combinations to help you plan your meal:

Option 1: Protein (egg or cottage cheese), wheat bread and 1 fruit (apple, orange or banana)

Option 2: ½ to 1 cup rice, palm size chicken or fish, vegetables (tomatoes or any fibrous vegetable will do)

Option 3: Cereal with low fat milk (protein) and top it with fruit for vitamins and minerals

“It’s good to have proteins in your breakfast because it gives you a feeling of being full. You won’t get easily hungry,” adds Dr. Reyes.

True enough, recent studies show that eating the right breakfast daily makes you lose weight. Eating properly helps you say goodbye to those extra pounds. So, enjoy your breakfast! – with reports from Maila Cuevas, Segment: Payo ni Dok, aired March 11, 2012
