Sports Unlimited invited some of our Pinoy champions to take a break from their training, and have some fun at Lake Caliraya.
Located approximately 1200 feet above sea level in Lumban, Laguna, The Caliraya Resort Club enjoys a cool refreshing climate that is a perfect respite from the city smog.
2011 was another banner year for the taekwondo poomsae trio of Rani Ann Ortega, Camille Alarilla and Janice Lagman. They successfully defended their SEA Games title after beating defending world champions Vietnam.
Wushu san shou fighter Mark Eddiva was also successful in defending his SEA Games title, defying the home advantage of his Indonesian opponent by dominating their fight from start to finish.
Dragon boat world champs Raymond Morales and Ramie Llano also joined our roster of champions, for a fun day out.
First on our playlist was Caliraya Resort Club’s famous earth ball. Marc and the athletes played a different kind of volleyball. Marc teamed up with the ladies while the boys invited resort guest Kristine Openya to join their team. Marc's team won the coin toss and they got to choose which side of the muddy grass court they will play. The ladies chose to avoid the muddier side but they learned too late that it was a wrong decision because the boys got to use the wind to their advantage!
The earth ball demanded teamwork and the mud posed a great challenge. It was hard, dirty and fun, just the kind of game Sports Unlimited loves to play!
Marc and the ladies did all they can but with Morales being a former national volleyball player before he became a paddler, the boys' team had the advantage in height and power.
Next up with the earth ball was a game of football. Marc and the girls lost in the volleyball game, and knowing these competitive ladies, they were out for revenge! With real fighters playing this game of football, with no rules but to get the ball inside the goal, it quickly turned into footbrawl!
No one was ready to give in. In true champion spirit, both teams fought really hard. In the end, the boys' speed and power earned them the winning goal.
But Marc and the ladies, of course, made sure they did not go down without a fight.
Caliraya Lake Resort also offered them lunch on their special boat, which toured them around the beautiful waters of this lake perched high in the Sierra Madres. Lake Caliraya enjoys a cool crisp climate almost all year round but as Marc and the athletes boarded the boat for a lunch cruise, they did not expect to have a windy welcome down the lake.
The fresh breeze is truly refreshing and the athletes welcomed the change from city air. As they entered a cove, it was a complete standstill. No wind, just beautiful calm lake and green.
As the athletes and Marc enjoyed their lunch, it was also a great way to chat and exchange stories about their sport, competitions and different training techniques.
After the hearty lunch, the zip line tower was next. The zip lines were approximately a little over 200 meters across. The ladies have gone zip lining before, so they let the boys go first to cheer them on.
Fear of heights? From the looks of it, they actually had fun. Marc and the champions were having so much fun that they went for another round. This time, the superman style!
