MANILA - Most people travel during summer to relax and unwind, but spending too much while on vacation or losing your money while abroad will surely ruin the mood.

Here are some tips on how to avoid unnecessary expenses as well as to secure your money while traveling.

For Vins Carlos, a travel blogger, the first thing one must do is to create an expense plan, where you allocate your budget for different aspects of your travels. These include food expenses, accommodations and extra expenses for transportation.

Carlos also believes that sticking to this plan can help avoid unnecessary spending, especially on items that are not essential.

"Kasi madalas, ang nangyayari sa atin, 'pag may nakita tayong mga bagay na wala sa Pilipinas o sa atin, bili agad, bili agad. Hindi mo namamalayan, lumalaki na 'yung gastos mo. Masho-shock ka na lang pagkita mo sa credit card bill mo," he said.

"Isipin mong mabuti kung kailangan mo siyang bilhin, kailangan mo ba siya, o want lang siya. Needs versus wants talaga," Carlos added.

It is also important to plan your trip well so as to save time and money. Carlos advises one to look for money-friendly locations, stores and accommodation. Looking into the pros and cons of booking a tour versus using public transportation in essential in saving money while traveling.

Keeping money safe

While traveling, it is advisable to only bring the money that you would need. You should also avoid placing all your money in one place, as well as putting your cash in your checked-in luggage.

It is also better to use a discreet sling bag instead of a back pack while traveling so as to keep your belongings close to your body at all times.

Bringing all your cards while traveling should be avoided. Only bring one ATM or credit card with you for emergency purposes.

For Carlos, it is also important to avail of travel insurance to protect yourself in case something goes wrong.

"Pero it's a neccessity, parang kailangan talaga siya, lalo ngayon sa lumalaking travel industry. Siyempre, may mga cases ng lost luggage, or cancelled flights, so kailangan to protect yourself na din," he explained.

Aside from keeping your money safe, it is also important to avoid posting your exact location at the exact time on social media, as this can compromise your safety. Posting photos of your boarding pass or plane ticket should also be avoided.

Traveling should be a way to unwind and relax, and not having to worry about the safety of your money will surely make your vacation worthwhile.
