TOKYO - An identified person had gained unauthorized access to a system managing the Yahoo! Japan portal website and came close to stealing information such as IDs, e-mail addresses and passwords on at least 1.27 million accounts Tuesday night, Yahoo Japan Corp. said Thursday.

The company's monitoring system detected malware trying to extract data, and the company shut down access and forced the program to shut down, it said, adding that it will investigate how it happened and take steps to prevent a recurrence of a similar incident.
