MANILA, Philippines - The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) is issuing a special Jose Rizal P1 coin this month, in commemoration of the national hero's 150th birthday.

The Office of the President and the BSP Monetary Board approved the issuance of the commemorative Rizal P1 coin.

The country celebrated Rizal's 150th birthday last June 19, 2011. Rizal was born in 1861, and was executed in Bagumbayan, now Luneta, on December 30, 1896.

The face of the P1 coin features a new and bigger portrait of Rizal and the markings "150 years", "Republika ng Pilipinas" and "1861-2011."

On the reverse side, the new BSP seal is prominently displayed as well as the etchings "1-piso" and "2011."

BSP produced 10 million pieces of the round, grayish, nickel-plated steel coin. It has the same size (24-millimeter in diameter) and weight (5.35 grams) as the current P1 coin in circulation.
