MANILA, Philippines - The National Telecommunications Commission says removing the expiration dates for cellphone prepaid load is not feasible at this time.

In an interview on ANC's Headstart, NTC director Edgardo V. Cabarios said even if consumers are not using their load, their SIM card is still being monitored by the telco, which incurs costs.

He added the payments for prepaid load go to network maintenance.

However, the NTC is studying plans to extend the expiration period.

"What we are trying to analyze now what is minimum amount, we call this carrying costs. If minimum amount of carrying cost is P2 a day, the P10 which is now valid for 3 days can now be valid for 5 days because if studies show P2 is carrying cost then yung P10, instead of 3 days eh 5 days na. So yun yung tinitingnan namin whether we can extend validity period now existing, if you can extend it more," he said.

The NTC also wants to expand signalling channels for text, call and data services to avoid blocked and dropped calls. - ANC
