MANILA, Philippines – Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) General Manager Jose Angel Honrado admitted on Wednesday that Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 is not equipped with sleeping quarters, but it does not deserve Asia’s “worst airport” tag.

Honrado said travel website Sleeping In Airports, which ranked Terminal 1 as Asia’s “worst,” based their study on passengers who actually sleep in airports while waiting for their flight.

"Without justifying, 'yung report na ito ay ginawa nu’ng sleepers in the airports. Ito ‘yung blog ng mga natutulog sa airport bago sila mag-board o kaya kapag dumating ng alanganing oras, matutulog sa airport bago mag-check in sa mga hotel,” he told dzMM’s “Failon Ngayon”.

Honrado explained that compared to the other airports on the list, Terminal 1 is old and has no sleeping facilities.

“Our airports especially Terminal 1 ay 30 years old na iyan. This was constructed sometime in early 1982. I have to admit that there are no facilities for sleeping at the airport. Dati mayroon kaming 12 rooms diyan but these are with fees, may bayad na $25. But for the general public who would like to sleep at the airport, talagang I have to admit na wala tayong sleeping facilities diyan sa Terminal 1," he said.

Honrado also cited the inclusion of Bali’s airport on the list, saying that despite its above standard facilities, it was tagged as one of the worst airports because it did not cater to the “sleepers in the airport.”

“Nakakapagtaka nga na pati Bali kasama, na sabi nila ay napakaganda, pero nakasama sa 10 worst airports in Asia because this was a survey done for the sleepers in the airport,” he said.

Sleeping In Airports has acknowledged that efforts to rehabilitate Terminal 1 are underway, but it seems that travelers have yet to see any improvements.

Malacañang, meanwhile, earlier said efforts to improve the facilities at Terminal 1 are ongoing.

"Tuluy-tuloy po ang gagawin nating renovation po dito sa NAIA 1 and siyempre we are always cognizant of the concerns of travelers and certainly we‘ll take this to (heart)," presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said.

Rounding up the website’s list for worst airports for sleeping are Mumbai, Islamabad, Singapore's Low Cost Carrier Terminal, Kolkata, Jakarta, Hanoi, Chennai, and Kuala Lumpur Low Cost Carrier Terminal.
