MANILA, Philippines - Transportation and Communications Secretary Jun Abaya expects the rehabilitation of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport terminal 1 to be completed within a year and a half.

"Our engineers, consultants found structural defects on (the) NAIA complex thus it's mandatory that we do rehabilitation works," he said on ANC's Business Nightly.

This comes as the NAIA 1 was named Asia's worst airport in a survey by travel website Sleeping in Airports.

Abaya said a third party consultant will review the new design which should take a shorter period of construction.

He said the contractors will use a mode of rehabilitation that won't disrupt current operations at NAIA 1.

"Hopefully within a year or a year and a half, we will have NAIA 3 fully operational and NAIA 1 fully rehabilitated," Abaya said. - ANC
