MANILA - Have you seen the Bench billboard on your way to Makati from Pasay? This towering Bench advert is one head-turner for a passing commuter.

From a company known for hip and happening clothing line for the young--and now, the young at heart.

Yes, it is him: Washington Sycip, the 94-year-old visionary tycoon.

On the sidelines of my recent interview with him, Sycip had a bit of a story becoming a Bench model. It all started with a photo given to him by a Japanese car company not too long ago.

Ben Chan and his team had seen it, liked how dapper he looked, and had a terrific idea: "Why not model for Bench?" they asked Sycip.

Sycip agreed, but on one condition--that the fee given him be directly donated to his advocacy helping the bottom poor through education.

As to the shoot, it didn't take long, he said. The photographer came in, had him pose on his seat, clicked away, and was done in no time.
