MANILA - Toys 'R' Us in the Philippines said Wednesday it was "open for business" even as its North American operations sought bankruptcy protection.
Customers can "continue to shop in our stores and online" as the Christmas season nears, Toys 'R' Us Philippines said in a statement
The Philippine toy retail chain clarified that is operated and managed by a unit of Robinsons Retail Holdings Inc, and is not part of the court-supervised financial restructuring in the US and Canada.
Toys 'R' Us Philippines said it operates 34 stand-alone stores and 44 Toys 'R' Us Toybox outlets inside Robinsons Department Store branches.
Last Monday, Toys 'R' Us Inc, the largest toy store chain in the US, filed for bankruptcy protection as it struggled to pay billions in debt.
The company's Canadian unit intends to seek protection in parallel proceedings.
The filing comes just as the retailer is gearing up for the holiday shopping season, which accounts for the bulk of its sales. - with Reuters
