Palace names Roberto Vergara as GSIS president

MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang has named Roberto Vergara as the new president and general manager of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS).

Vergara, a fund manager and director at Lionhart Limited, Hong Kong, will replace Winston Garcia at the helm of the state pension fund.

Vergara received his Master of Business Administration degree from the Harvard Business School, and his Bachelor of Science degree in Management, Engineering and Mathematics from the Ateneo de Manila University.

His resume includes stints at Morgan Stanley Asia and Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein.

Observers believe his expertise will help GSIS in the investment of its $1-billion foreign fund.
