The traditional ways of rice farming and distribution are ripe for disruption, says a French-Filipino couple aiming to boost not just farm yields but farmers' incomes as well.

Rachel and Patrick Renucci told ANC's Early Edition that pilot projects of their "Rice Revolution" program in Leyte have so far seen yields rise to over 200 sacks of palay (unmilled rice) per hectare compared to the normal yield of just 60 to 80 sacks.

The program also aims to raise farmers' income tenfold and bring down the cost of rice itself.

"We are targeting a production cost of say P6 per kilo, which we have achieved in our pilot. At the moment, the national average is P14 per kilo," said Rachel.

Patrick Renucci said the key to boosting yields is proper farm inputs as well as proper technology.
