MANILA, Philippines - Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile on Monday said he supports the sin tax reform bill, but will make sure the additional taxes are reasonable.
"I am in favor of increasing sin taxes … up to a reasonable level," he told reporters. "What I'm against is the distorted nature of the proposal coming from the House of Representatives and from the finance sector of the government."
"Let's study this, and we will come up with a reasonable measure that will not shock the market, shock the economy," Enrile added.
The bill, which the House passed early this year, is now at the committee level in the Senate. The Senate ways and means committee has conducted three public hearings on the measure.
