MANILA, Philippines - Transportation Secretary Joseph Abaya has appointed a new officer-in-charge (OIC) at the Metro Rail Transit line 3 (MRT-3), as problems continue to plague the mass transit system.

He named MRT-3 director for operations Renato San Jose as OIC, replacing Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) administrator Honorio Chaneco.

Chaneco will now focus solely on the operations of Light Rail Transit lines 1 and 2. He was appointed as OIC after MRT-3 general manager Al Vitangcol was sacked amid accusations he was part of a group that tried to extort $30 million from Czech train maker Inekon group.

Abaya said San Jose can now focus his attention on the day-to-day operations of the MRT-3, which has continued to suffer technical problems daily.

On Tuesday, the operations of MRT-3 were disrupted after the doors of a train did not close.

Last August 13, one of the MRT-3 trains overshot the tracks, leaving 36 people injured. The accident was blamed on human error.
