MANILA -- When products are about to expire, suppliers should pull out their products from supermarket and groceries.

However, what they do after pulling these products out of shelves is up to them.

"Kapag malapit nang mag-expire, it's either pinu-pullout ng supplier, at hindi na natin alam kung ano ginagawa nila doon. Maaring ibinibigay as relief operations, maaring binibigay as donation to charitable institutions," said Steve Cua of the Philippine Amalgamated Supermarkets Association.

Cua added that some manufacturers and suppliers also advise them to sell the products at discounted prices.

"Yung iba, they would suggest: Sir bakit hindi na lang ibenta na buy 1, take 1, or discounted price, para masubukan ng ibang hindi pa nakasubok ng produkto namin."

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), manufacturers should ensure that their expired products are removed from the market.

It is also their responsibility to dispose expired products, and to ensure that they will not be sold to consumers.
