MANILA – Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Kim Henares is willing to undergo a lifestyle check to silence her critics amid the tax agency’s campaign against tax evaders.
Henares said all her earnings are openly indicated in her statement of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN).
“Wala naman ako problema, i-lifestyle check niyo ako, nakalagay naman ‘yan lahat sa SALN ko,” she told dzMM on Thursday.
Henares revealed that her take home pay as BIR commissioner is P12,000 a week or P48,000 a month.
“Gross [income] ko in a year is almost P1 million, kasama ‘yung mga bonuses and 13th month pay,” she said.
Henares said her many years as a lawyer in the private sector allowed her to live a comfortable lifestyle through the years.
“Maju-justify ko naman kasi nagtrabaho ako ng matagal sa pribadong sektor at malaki naman ang kinikita ko dati,” she said.
Henares is again in a word war with the camp of Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao following the Supreme Court’s issuance of a temporary restraining order (TRO) on the surety and cash bond required by the Court of Tax Appeals.
Henares said despite the TRO, the BIR will continue to pursue Pacquiao on his almost P3 billion tax liability.
Pacquiao’s counsel Tranquil Salvador said they will present evidence to prove that the boxing champ paid taxes in the US in his previous fights.
But Henares said the BIR had given Pacquiao all the opportunity to present this until the assessment of his tax liability became final.
"Why did he not present it? Kung talagang may ebidensya, bakit ‘di niya ipinakita noong day one pa lang? Ginulo niyo pa kami. Dapat nga sisingilin pa kayo sa cost of litigation," she said.
