MANILA, Philippines - Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) said some 188,000 customers still do not have electricity as of Thursday morning.
Jose Zaldarriaga, Meralco spokesperson, said there are still 3.69% of customers, which represent 188,000, without power. On Wednesday, there were around 400,000 customers who did not have electricity.
"This is quite a significant improvement. We have continuously conducted restoration efforts in the areas without power in the last few days... Hopefully we will be able to restore (power) today," he told ANC.
Of the 188,000 customers without power, Zaldarriaga said 138,000 are in Metro Manila, with the remaining customers in Bulacan, Laguna and Rizal.
Some Meralco facilities have been damaged by the floods.
"There are damaged facilities but we are still pursuing with our initiative of restoring power to the remaining customers who are currently without electricity, except in areas where there are still floods. We need to be deliberate in restoring power in these areas. We would like to ensure the safety of the residents first before we initiate any restoration efforts," he said.
Meralco had to shut power in flooded areas, as heavy rains pounded Metro Manila and nearby provinces.
