MANILA, Philippines - Brace for another spike in Manila Electric Co.'s (Meralco) generation charge in your August bill.

Sources from Meralco said the increase is less than P0.50/kwh but the utility will announce the final figure tomorrow (August 8). Meralco had implemented a total hike of P0.18/kwh for July.

But Bayan Muna Rep. Neri Colmenares questions the impending hike in generation and other charges.

Colmenares said the ERC should not have allowed Meralco to just pass it on to consumers. But based on practice, Meralco's first tranche of electricity bill is usually out every 5th or 6th of the month.

He said any increase must not be allowed as long as the result of the collusion probe on the rate spikes in December and January have not been released

The ERC earlier promised to release the result of the investigation as early as March but until now report has not been released.

Also, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) confirmed that starting august bill, the P0.381/kwh universal charge will also be included.

The universal charge is for missionary electrification of Napocor.

Secondary cap extended

The ERC has also confirmed the 120-day extension of the secondary cap in the electricity trading market.

ERC director for market operations Deborah Layugan said the extension will only be lifted once the commission comes up with a final figure on the appropriate cap to avoid spikes in power prices.
