MANILA – The Philippine government aims to improve the lives of the country's farmers by the end of President Aquino's term.

On ANC Presents: Philippine Development in Focus, Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Arsenio Balisacan said the government is doing what it can to accelerate spending in the agriculture sector.

Balisacan said Secretary Francis Pangilinan is also a big help in implementing its development plan for farmers.

He added that the government's shift to a budget that specifies targets will help the government support the sector better.

"With the appointment now of Secretary Kiko Pangilinan, we expect that developments in agriculture will now be faster particularly in infrastructure development,” Balisacan said.

“The key to getting agriculture moving is really to get investments in infrastructure, connect the small farmers to markets, and getting the support services on time, particularly access to credit and technology,” he added.

Meanwhile, Budget Sec. Butch Abad said the government also vows to boost overall spending in order to attract more investments in the country.

“I think in the second quarter and the succeeding quarters, the government expenditure program will go very much faster, which will signal to the private sector the government’s intention in investing in key areas such as construction, social services, things like that,” he said.

The fifth and final installment of ANC Presents: Philippine Development in Focus produced in cooperation with the National Economic and Development Authority will air on ANC on August 7 at 6 p.m. -- ANC
