MANILA - The Office of Transportation Safety will not be abolished, but airport authorities will take over the screening of passengers, Manila International Airport Authority General Manager Ed Monreal said Friday.
The new government has begun reforms at the airports to curb the "tanim-bala"extortion racket and to improve conditions in one of the world's worst air terminals according to online surveys.
Earlier this week, regular taxis were allowed to fetch passengers at the airport, giving passengers a much cheaper option to airport taxis.
Monreal said leaving the (OTS) to set the policies while the MIAA implements it would be a better set-up.
The MIAA chief said he planned to hire 500 more airport personnel for security screening, which would bring the unit's strength to 1,200. -- reports from Jacque Manabat, ABS-CBN News
