MANILA, Philippines - Bayan Telecommunications Inc. (Bayantel) and Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) signed an agreement to interconnect their services in Negros, Albay and Leyte.

Under the agreement, Bayan landline subscribers in those provinces won't have to pay extra charges to call PLDT subscribers.

The two companies signed similar agreements last year, covering Cebu and Camarines Sur.

"Even two competing companies can rise up to the occasion and work hand in hand to serve the general good," Mariano Manrico Abogado II, head of Bayantel's carrier business, said.

The agreement was signed on Thursday morning at the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC). The NTC mandates interconnection of telecommunications firms to encourage more infrastructure investments that would benefit consumers.

Regulators say at least 75% of both Bayantel and PLDT subscribers nationwide have connected networks.

"The local interconnection would make calls within one province toll-free. walang long distance charges... Ito ay patuloy hanggat di pa nacocover ang buong bansa," NTC director Edgardo Cabarios said. - Report from Lois Calderon, ANC
