MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Trade and Industry's Fair Trade and Enforcement Bureau has issued show cause orders to 64 stores, including some branches of Puregold, Super8, SM Hypermart and Robinsons Supermarket, for alleged profiteering.
The FTEB conducted price monitoring activities in Metro Manila last July 3-4 and July 7-11, where it discovered 31 supermarkets and 33 wet market stalls selling basic and prime goods above the suggested retail price (SRP).
"These retailers are selling non-agricultural basic necessities and prime commodities at P0.40 to P13.00 above the SRPs which prompted the DTI to immediately take action by issuing them Show Cause Orders to explain the high prices on their products," Trade Consumer Protection Group Undersecretary Victorio Mario A. Dimagiba said in a statement.
Among the products sold above the SRP include batteries, beef loaf, canned sardines, coffee refill, condensed milk, corned beef, detergent bar, instant noodles, evaporated milk, luncheon meat, mineral and purified water, fish sauce, powdered milk, soy sauce, toilet soap, and vinegar.
