MANILA - (UPDATE) Mining companies said Thursday they were helping preserve the environment after President Rodrigo Duterte issued a fresh warning to the industry.
Duterte on Wednesday said he was "warning the rich" after seeing on ABS-CBN's Failon Ngayon the damage wrought by mining on the environment.
The Chamber of Mines said it shared the President's "deep concern" for the environment.
"Mining companies have a clear responsibility to manage their impact on the environment, guarantee the full and complete rehabilitation of mined-out areas, and most importantly, ensure that communities get their fair share in the benefits from mining," the group said in a statement.
"The Chamber of Mines does not condone wrongdoing within the industry. Erring mines must be prosecuted and made accountable to the fullest extent of the law," according to the group's spokesman, Ronald Recidoro.
Global Ferronickel president Dante Bravo said he supported the President's statement.
"We are all for responsible mining and those who may be found guilty of destructive practices should face the legal consequences. It is part of the regulatory process," Bravo said.
The Failon Ngayon episode, "Pamana ng Mina," aired on July 9.
