MANILA, Philippines - Economic Planning Secretary Arsenio Balisacan said the Aquino administration will invest more money in the agriculture sector in its last two years.

On ANC Presents: Philippine Development in Focus, Balisacan said empowering the agriculture sector is important in reducing poverty and promoting inclusive growth.

He added the Philippines needs to connect farmers to the manufacturing industry and the market to help improve their income.

"Improving access to quality employment, improving opportunities for income growth in agriculture is bound to be key to poverty reduction... What we really need to do is to connect farmers to the manufacturing, high value chain so that farmers would be connected to markets," he said.

To do this, Balisacan said the government should accelerate improvement in roads and infrastructure in rural areas.

"To achieve the high level of productivity we need to invest in our most binding constraints... Infrastructure, yung poor quality of the infrastructure such that moving goods such that inputs would be less expensive than what they are now," he said.
