MANILA – A Palace official said on Thursday that government is already zeroing in on suspected hoarders of garlic.
“According to Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala, law enforcers are conducting surveillance on suspected hoarders. Concerned parties are urged to unload their stocks to avoid arrest and prosecution,” said Communications Secretary Sonny Coloma.
Prices of rice, garlic and ginger have been on the uptick, but with the Department of Agriculture assuring the public of the sufficiency of supplies, attention has focused on possible hoarding to create an artificial shortage that has led to higher prices.
For now, the government has deployed mobile stores to sell these commodities at regular prices even as it monitors price movements.
